Shawano Invitational 9/29/15 Grades 5th and under, Shawano only

It was a rainy afternoon, but the rain cooled the temperature down a bit.  The kids ran tough!  Overall there were 91 kids in this division, of which 47 were Brener Running Club kids, with 6 from Hillcrest, 1 from St James, and 2 from Sacred Heart.  The top kids' times are competitive with the Middle School races!

Lining up, anxious to go!

We got to run with the big guys!

It was "Bring Your Brother" day at practice!  Derek Minch's older brother Michael Mault, who's on the Shawano High School Varsity Cross Country team, came over to run with us with a few of his team mates!  They introduced themselves, told us their best 5K times, and took us through warm up drills.  Then, each of them ran with us in different little groups!  They barely broke any sweat at all!  Wish we can all run like that!

Warming up in the gym.

Stretching in a big circle.

And we shout, "Go Hawks!!"
Even Coach Stomberg from the high school team, came over to watch us run relays!  It was one of the best practices we've had!

Shawano Invite, Menominee Great Bear Run; OCONTO FALLS

Shawano Invite

will be on Monday, Sep 28, starting with the youth run at 4 pm (grades 6 and under), followed by 7th and 8th grades.  We are currently practicing on the course, which goes between Middle School, the woods, and Brener field and playground.  Length is 1.75 miles, mostly flat.  It is certainly a doable race for most kids who practices at least a few times a week, for 1-2 miles each time.  Medals are usually given to top 20 finishers.  We just got word the the course has changed a little, so we'll have to un-learn, and re-learn the new course!

On this day, Running Club will meet in gym after school as usual, warm up, use the bathroom, and head over to Middle School for the race.  Plan on coming to cheer for your runner, and pick them up immediately after the race.

Menominee Great Bear Run

will be on Tuesday Oct 6th, at Pine Hills Golf Course in Gresham, approximately 18 miles from school.  Coach Joe has secured a grant from Thrivent Financials to cover the cost of a school bus to the race. The bus will leave at approximately 2:15 pm.  There will be a permission form coming home, on which parents will need to indicate their runner's intent to run the race, ride the bus, emergency contact numbers, and that they will be picked up from school at approximately 6:30 pm when bus returns from the race.  If parents wish to meet at the race and pick up the runner at the race, they must check with coaches before leaving.  There may be room on the bus for parents, depending on how many kids sign up to run.  It would be a good idea to pack snacks and beverage for this away race, for eating AFTER the race since we will be coming back in the evening.

The course is also approximately 1.75 miles, but is hilly.  In coming weeks, we will find a few nearby hills to train on.

To ensure your runner has energy to race, encourage him/her to drink lots of water the morning of race; eat a solid lunch with mix of carbohydrates; and a snack bar such as Power or Cliff Bar at 2 pm the latest.  The 2 hours before the race, your child should not put much in his/her stomach, to avoid a side ache.  In the past there were kids who ran so hard, or got so nervous, that they lost their lunch on the course!

So that we can look like a team, and be easier to spot, please dress your runners in their cross country shirts (red) or club shirt (bright yellow), or similar color shirts; and black shorts or exercise pants.  If the forecast is below 60 degrees, it would be a good idea to wear long exercise pants.  It is always best to have extra dry clothing to change into immediately after racing, to avoid getting cold wearing sweaty things.

Racing challenges the runners, and can serve to motivate many kids for years to come.  Encourage them to set goals for themselves, and work towards them.  For many, the first goal is just to FINISH a race.  For others, it may be to cut down their time, or win a medal, or finish without feeling completely exhausted.  Come cheer them on!

OCONTO FALLS RACE!

We just got notice that the Oconto Falls race has been moved from the hilly golf course, to the high school/elementary school area.  It is on Thursday Oct 15; 1.5 mile in length, mostly flat.  Youth race is grade 6 and under, at 4:15 pm.  Since our runners have been training so well, we will try to attend this race.  We are asking that every family provide $2 per child so we can hire a school bus to leave Hillcrest by 2 pm, Brener by 2:15.  Parents may leave with child when race is done and we cool down, likely by 5 pm.  Another sign up sheet/permission to release from school, will be coming home soon.
